Yerba Buena's going to be a busy place on Tuesday...the American Chemical Society is having a meeting at the Moscone Center next week with over 12,000 people in attendance. I'll have a friend in town for the meeting, so maybe I'll snoop around YPCFA and see what's up. Maybe the walls are thin enough that I can just put my ear up to them...

I don't claim to know a thing about trademark law, but looking at this simply I find it difficult to understand how the term "Windows" can become a trademark but "App Store" cannot.
I have nothing to back this up but I'm thinking one never sees the word "Windows" without Microsoft accompanying it somewhere. It's more of a phrase which can indeed be trademarked.
Could be wrong of course.
Also of note is an attempt to own the word "Thunderbolt". I don't think one can copyright the weather.

Really? Honestly, this is the most uninteresting Apple product since the Performa series in my opinion. Yawn. Not compelling. The SJ RDF will probably help my opinion, but still. My phone works. Thats all I need. (gah, am I getting old?!?!)

I personally could care less about this upgrade. I have have been more than satisfied with my ultimate 13" w/4g and 256 SSD. Handles all of my needs I.E. work/VMware/ all the other bells and whistles; and even have been doing my Xcode projects on it.
Seriously, I see no need or reason to want a faster more reliable machine for it's purpose; other than saying it's got an older chip inside. Maybe next year when many thunderbolt devices are in the wild, but again no biggie for me.
I may be in the minority, but for once I am very satisfied with this revision over my old Rev B.
To each his own I suppose.:)

So, AFTER paying 30% in federal and state income taxes, whatever percentage in sales and property tax, you are still able give away an additional 50% or more to charity? So you are able to live on like 3% of your earnings? I would LOVE to be in that position! It's very admirable, but hardly reachable for the average person. I try to give whenever I can, but I can admit that's it's usually around $2k a year.
Actually, it is far more likely that they donate from pre-tax earnings, then use those donations to reduce their tax burden. The end result being a net tax rate of something like the 17-25% most high income taxpayers pay.

Isnt it pretty reasonable to assume that this will really just be iPod related/iTunes movie store related because macrumors did not get an invite but iLounge did. ABC News is even talking about the news iPods and Movie store. This thread has really gone crazy with people talking about the airport express and such. It has been a year since the iPod nano has been updated so we can be CERTAIN that their will be new nanos.

I'm not to favorable of enviromentalists, but I'll admit they're good cause if it weren't for them we probably would screw up alot of stuff, they keep it evened out, but still they're at a computer convention they should be greatful they were even allowed to have a booth at all, they should have abided by the contract.

From what I'm reading only GSM devices do this - so if you have the WiFi it is probably not doing it.

I found this interesting comment on the making waves site - is it true. If it is then the commies at greenpeace need to stop bitching.
Greenpeace appears to have its facts in a muddle. I've studied the environmental performance of the leading companies and here is what I've found.
1. Apple is rated best in class in environmental performance for both portables and desktops by the US Environmental Protection Agency's EPEAT tool (www.EPEAT.net). This tool is based on a 2006 IEEE standard for product environmental performance.
2. In August, Greenpeace conducted extensive tests on leading laptop brands to establish whether or not they were compliant with a European substance ban directive. Apple's laptops were subjected to more than one hundred tests and they were unequivocally found to be RoHS compliant. Note that Greenpeace has subsequently buried this report.
3. Greenpeace found 200 parts per million of TBBA (a harmless brominated flame retardant currently used by all manufacturers) in an Apple fan assembly. TBBA is not banned, and even if it were you would need to quadruple the quantity that was detected in the Apple fan assembly before it reached the European definition of concentration that are permitted for 'banned' substances.
4. HP's laptop failed the compliance test, and Greenpeace ranked HP as the top performer in their August score-card ranking.
5. Despite being ranked at the bottom of Greenpeaces scorecard, Apple is the only manufacturer to have commited to phasing out PVC and TBBA without qualifiers (i.e if economically viable)
6. Apple is the only manufacturer to have eliminated DecaBrome from all plastic parts.
From my research, I can only conclude that Greenpeace is targeting Apple because of the 60 million iPod customers out there. Pity, I used to have a lot of respect for Greenpeace.

Grrr. Doesn't greenpeace have something better to deal with, like all these diesel Semi-turcks driving up and down the 5 freeway? Doesn't greenpeace have private jets? Boats? Cars, trucks, etc? Those all pollute the environment far more than a MacBook.
I think something should be done for the environment. I care deeply for the children in china who get to dismantle toxic products (notice my location? You're speaking to a big human rights activist here). I just think the changes should be made by someone who is sane.
People don't understand what freedoms truly are. It doesn't mean you get to say and do whatever you want wherever you want - that's anarchy, and anarchy is bad... unless you're the biggest, strongest and most brutal. Freedom of speech really means you can't be jailed or otherwise punished by the government for saying what you want in a pulic arena.

I bought National Treasure and was actually thrilled with the quality. I have the Apple Dock with the Apple Remote, and with National Treasure on my 20" tv in my room, you COULD NOT POSSIBLY tell the diff between a DVD and the download. In fact, I had my friend bring over his copy of National Treasure on DVD, and had them both playing as we flipped back and forth on the tv and you could not tell a difference on my tv.....
Well, it is a SDTV, I have not yet played my download on our HDTV...But DVDs look fine on it, so I'm assuming this will as well.....I am very happy and will definately buy again, just need more titles....

Doubt it. The hardware is extremely expensive, nobody is excited about it, and there's still a pretty big risk that bluray won't even catch on, whether it's beat out by hddvd or if neither catches on. At this point, bluray would likely just get a big yawn from the public.

You think your bank doesn't know where you've been and what you've bought? You think the government, and most companies, don't already know more about you than you do yourself, like where you go, what you buy, who your friends are, what political persuasion you are?

why is it that the media constantly confuse PHONES with OPERATING SYSTEMS. the headline screams "Windows phone to top iPhone".....
THEN the chart shows they are comparing OPERATING SYSTEMS. It's important to remember that Apple's phenomenal market share is accomplished on ONE handset (yes it gets updated every year, but there's only ONE iPhone) compared to dozens and dozens that run Android and (maybe someday) Windows Phone 7.
I still doubt it, but regardless, no SINGLE PHONE will come anywhere near the iPhone.

I don't usually speculate, but I find it interesting "Showtime" is capitalized. Could the downloads be part of some partnership with the cable channel? Just wild speculation on my part.

Apples sales volume is staggering, as is their income. These are clear facts that are growing weekly.
With that in mind, the fact that Apple insists on fostering negative energy, launching a law suit, and showing their pro war position to the world, is very revealing of who they are.
Unable to be a good corporate citizen, unable to satisfy their greed as they rake in more profits than the competition, Apples looking rather desperate. Nothing will ever be enough.
Please come to Korea. Samsung have been doing this illegally for years, often suing the small person to popperdom. No big corporation is good, but when you attach massive corps under the umbrella of a conglomerate, you combine all of that evil into one massive black hole.
At least Apple try to get to the bottom of suicides and deaths at their factories; at least they have only one core business to protect ruthlessly. Samsung (indeed, the biggest copycat I've seen) are huge pirates (selling fake DVD's/CD's in their grocery stores; rebadging Mercedes, Nissan, etc., cars for their own line; buying out large portions of most newspapers here). Apple's rise to the top has been fettered with bad, but not outright illegal bad to the extent Samsung's has.

I am especially shocked that you have these views after stating you have volunteered 2500 hrs (or over 100 continuous days) in the last 2 years...I would think that this experience would have you develop a sense of compassion, not make you more cold hearted...
I volunteered only to further my college applications. I really couldn't give a crap about the people my work supposedly helped. All I care about is that it helped me.
I don't view myself as cold hearted, I view myself as being a realist. This "let's be nice to everyone" crap has turned 95% of society into blithering retarded bleeding hearts. I only care about people who I can use to further myself, or those who have genuinely done something caring for me (family); otherwise you are completely expendable to me (take note anyone who works under me in a decade). I do not feel that society's rules apply to me, because I simply know that I am better than many of the people in society; the rules (including speed limits) are there for lesser folk. I really hope Intel delays USB 3. I have a mid 2007 MBP, even though I use FW800, I have resorted to using my ExpressCard slot with an eSata adapter which is even faster than FW800. If anything, the difference will be made with the companies who make the external HDD to implement thunderbolt technology into their products. I just hate usb in general, I only use it for flash drives and my mouse.
