I feel that a tablet to most people is just a giant PDA, and I really don't see myself using it for any other reason than that. I know there are business reasons to have tablets, like for nurses, or production people, etc., but for the average person, what's the revolution? Too much money for too little IMO.

Too big! This is what M$ didn't understand. The value of a tablet is NOT simply being able to write on the screen of a laptop. Tablets need to be comfortable in one hand, they need to be able to collect information (text, drawing, audio, still and motion video), they need to be able to play back information (on its own screen, but also on TVs, projectors, etc), and they need to be able to sync up with home computers. I probably want some functional capabilties (e.g. iPhoto red eye and retouch, or simple text/excel type input) but I DO NOT NEED TO RUN PHOTOSHOP ON MY TABLET! I will transfer my data/photos/video onto my main computer to do that kind of work.
If you give me a highly portable dock (something I can toss in a bag, and whip it out if I need it), then I won't need a bevy of I/O devices (firewire, s-video, etc) on the tablet itself. That can shrink the size, weight, and heat output.
If Apple does release a device like this, I make only one prediction about it. Some idiot will try to run Quake on it and report the framerate. "Because how can you justify an $(N*100) device that runs Quake at only (F) fps?"

Yet you haven't convinced many here. Doesn't that indicate that perhaps you need to address it again, and perhaps find other ways to illustrate your point? It's not like I'm unwilling to be convinced. I just haven't heard a good reason to accept your argument.

Living in Australia, we don't have many technological advantages over the US, but the telecommunications strategy is one.
We, in general, do not have locked phones over here, nor crippled ones like your companies currently provide but they are still subsidised by the telecoms.
I currently have an 02 XDA II Mini, and if Apple did release a phone with even basic PDA features, wi-fi and bluetooth I would dump this Microsoft POS immediately.
The hard thing to get right about a PDA with phone, is that it is a PDA with a phone component added in. It doesn't work brilliantly.
I have no doubt that Apple would do a much better job integrating all the different components together for a seamless experience, even with V.1 of the product.

I've never heard of this company -- are they reputable, does anyone know? I've heard all sorts of stories abut these types of things being spyware or some such, don't want to pollute my Mac with any of that garbage!

I have installed this, no slow down and it doesn't get in the way.
I have it installed as I frequently share files with Windows users and don't want to be a carrier.

I do not see MM going free. I could see them lowering the price or adding some more features, but it isn't going to be free. I am ok with that. It has always worked for me. I know it hasn't for everyone, and that there are other free services, but I have liked how it works across all my Apple devices. And is worth it simply for the Find My iPhone feature.

I agree. The only situation I can see where this would be a possibility is if one of the "iPad killers" actually did kill the iPad 2. And they came out with specs that just absolutely blew it away. But I just don't see that happening. It looks like the iPad 2 and the Xoom are coexisting just fine.

Some of what you mention sounds cool... but I've never Jail Broke my iPhone and it runs just fine - far from unusable. Nice that you love all the mods, but it's not for everyone. No need to insult those who choose not to JB.
I mean a car from 20 years ago runs fine if you haven't driven any other car. The internet from 10 years ago would be fine if you had never experienced todays broadband. Hell life as a virgin would be cool if you didn't know what sex was.

- Buy on the App Store and perform a local upgrade
- Buy on the App Store and upgrade or fresh install another machine on the network
- Buy on the App Store and burn a disk to fresh install the local machine, or any other machine I want to
- Get a free copy of the above for a Mac purchased within X days of the Lion release.
The pricing also needs to be fair. The price should not be greater than what I could obtain the disk for, including any discounts retailers may provide.

How would one do a "complete fresh reinstall" by this method? Or will we be able to burn to a disc/USB key?
I would hope that creating a bootable DVD/flash drive would be part of the installation process.

I would really like to see Apple have a laptop cheaper than $1,100, and I think there would be a definite market for the, especially for teenagers looking into getting a Mac. I know that's unlikely, but...
Anyways I hope that the MBPs get the processor update (and a new enclosure) very soon and I really hope the MBs and Mac Minis follow soon after.
