Here is a good overviewnfor the extremely inefficient Japanese agricultural industry:
http://www.japan-101.com/government/rice_trade_policy.htm
There are strong parallels between this and other Japanese markets.
Unlike Americans, the Japanese would rather build everything in Japan and pay a higher cost for it (= inefficiency). (I live in Japan and am fluent in Japanese)
Well, the US spends 20 billion a year on agriculture subsidies as well, so we're in about the same boat. At least Japan uses agriculture subsidies to support small farmers. We use them to support DelMonte.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agricultural_subsidy
And as for the reason why Japanese spend more on Japanese products--that they are higher quality--if Japanese companies can convince Japanese consumers to spend more on domestically made products, why can't American companies do the same?
In general, Japanese made products *are* better. That's not inefficiency, that's good marketing and an educated consumer.

That is Fuji-san, and that's how it looks....
Always nice when someone goes public with their ignorance...
To be fair, it doesn't always have that color scheme. I've taken several pictures of Fuji, and none have that particular color scheme.

Yep, downloadable TV shows, movies for purchase or rent, iPhoto photobooks/prints/calendars/cards etc.
Who gives a rat's? Not me because we can't use any of them.
Heh, I knew exactly what you were talking about with the download issue speed, as soon as I saw Australia in your profile -- I used to work for a company that provided online content. We regularly did "low bandwidth" testing, because of a sizeable Australian user base.
As a Canuck, I agree with the sentiment ... I still can't even get the "free" TV shows. New tech is neat, but why do I care as long as the RIAA monopoly only allows it to be distributed to a privlieged few?
Unfortunate, because here in Vancouver I don't even know anybody who isn't on broadband. Canada is the perfect market for this, one of the most wired countries in the world, huge broadband penetration, so we can actually use the store, but, nooooo ... its just too scary to let people actually see the content.

That is the way Lion works. You just run the downloaded installer from the disk image. No need to burn to DVD or USB. The installer runs for a bit in your current OS, then reboots itself to complete the installation.
Thank you, appreciate the detailed reply

iPhone 3GS = 3rd iPhone
iPhone 4S = 5th iPhone.
Anyone still debating a "processor upgrade" isn't much of an upgrade grossly mistakes the upgrade the 3GS was over the 3G and that the 3G was over the original.
The 3GS basically shares the same internals as an iPhone 4, aside from RAM. Comestic upgrades are not any bigger than spec upgrades. And iPhone 4S would still be the 5th iPhone and thus the "iPhone 5" monicker is appropriate.
It might be named iPhone 5 but it will essentially be an iPhone 4S/iPad 2 style update.

there is generic design layout UI being implemented across different brand for the same niche - then there is blatant rip-off
i'm sorry - the galaxy tab does appear an obvious imitation; i have not used of these galaxy tabs, and do not intend to - i have a feeling samsung will worm out of this one

Android is funded by target advertising? I didnt know that, can you provide a link that backs this up?
Android is given freely, so how does Google make money? The same way they make just about (95%+) ALL their money: from selling information to advertisers. So Android exists to get more people to use Google software, which then allows them to sell more ads and make money.

Jobs is spinning his BS again as usual. Even when there is overwheming evidence to the contrary...he still insults the intelligence of his customers who he clearly regards as beneath him.

You (and others) are aware that "Developer Previews", when available, have always predated the Beta releases? It's not even a beta.
Apple says they will release Lion in summer, only Dev Previews have appeared so far, and suddenly people think it plausible for Apple to release a GM build in March?
And btw, I'm really disappointed in the reporting of the ludicrous "GM" rumour as it's pretty obviously wrong - usually MacRumors curates their news better than this.
Agreed :) 100% correct, these have been only two developer previews so a "straight to GM" claim is highly unlikely. I was/am amazed at how many sites are reporting a GM build is close/in the works as this has not been Apple's OS X development system of years prior (and should still be as developers/etc need beta's to flesh out their applications for porting and debugging to Apple engineers). Looking forward to the beta's, I'm guessing there is more to Lion than what we currently know from perusing some of the Lion Dev forums.
Apparently they claim to know than they do, which is typical. Your observations are spot on.
Is this directed towards me? If so, I'm very familiar with how things are done and I would like to believe I am fairly knowledgable in the systemic approach taken by Apple in 10.X releases :). My comment was regarding the veracity of the reports from MacRumors and many other Apple/tech oriented sites stating a GM build is around the corner while we haven't even reached beta builds (I've posted on this quite a bit in the Lion forum).

So Steve is saying there is no database of locations? Thats just an outright lie.
No. Re-read the three sentences he typed. He said that Apple is not tracking anyone. That infers that the database of locations is not being used to track a users location.

Besides, most mock-ups here show a rather enhanced iPod, than a REAL tablet...so this means most people want/need only a grown-up PDA, instead of a tablet as such...and I couldn't agree more.
How do you define a REAL tablet?

will only upgrade if the coolest features of iOS 5 can't be run on 3GS...otherwise, i'll wait another year for iPhone 6.
Why would you hold on to an old Iphone when you can sell it for at least $150 or more? I know people who sold their Iphone 3Gs right after the Iphone 4 came out for close to $300. We will all be able to do the same when the Iphone 5 comes out...sell you old Iphone 4 and get the Iphone 5. ATT usually lets you upgrade every year.
And September is only 2 months later than usual...

Maybe a new line, but I cant see the MBP line going ARM. Possibly the Airs. Windows 8 will be ARM compatible + x86 so it could happen...

For the first time since the introduction of the iPhone Apple Computer is concentrating on the COMPUTER more than the iPhone. I for one hope they will nail Lion. :)

I was at a local apple store and they are selling the tom tom car kit already. What a rip off, because you have to pay for the app seperate. I got the griffin car mount for $20 at frys and the navigon app, works great.

First off the Prada was officially announced by LG on January 18, 2007. The iPhone was announced by Apple on january 9, 2007. The last time that I checked, January 9th came before January 18th. THAT makes the iPhone first, sorry.
Secondly the All of the other copy cats look a ton more like the iPhone than the iPhone looks like the Prada or anything else for that matter.
As far as whether the iPhone and iPad are innovative, I respectfully disagree with you.
The LG KE850, also known as the LG Prada,[1] is a touchscreen mobile phone made by LG Electronics. It was first announced on December 12, 2006. -

Second why do you only save $300 when you opt for the 2Ghz model but the 3Ghz model costs $800 more???
Its relative to the processor you have selected. If you clicked the lower CPU the 3Ghz would be + even more.

I always thought the direction Apple would go with a tablet was as a consumer device extension to iPhoto, almost how iPod extends iTunes. Like how iTV will wirelessly pull viedo from Macs in your household, this could have been doing the same with photos years ago. Although primarily a picture frame, it could have had a touch screen and perhaps running full (or limited) OS X and permitting additional functions that users come up with.
Before recently, its likely this would either been too expensive a product for someone using it as just a picture frame, either that or too limited for someone wanting other functions. But that's surely not as true anymore, seeing how small and cheap devices are getting so capable these days.

Just trying to hedge off the 5,123 "This is BS, no MBP/MB updates OMG!!!11BBQ" threads. ;)
Gary you forgot the MacTower miss-spellings of 'Merom', how everything is pin compatible, everyone is an engineer/marketing/business pro and if anything does get released there is something wrong with it.

Why couldn't apple mail a movie to you via USPS? Pop it into your <insert favorite Mac flavor> and have it automaticly import into iTunes library. There is no way I would download a 2g file to watch a movie. 2g is way too big to download. Compare that to music, 5mb on the high end. 2g is 400 times the size. I don't see downloading as a viable option, atleast not at the resolution that makes it competitive with DVD.
PS I think downloadable movies sounds great, but I don't think it is practicle.
What rock are you living under?? A 5mb file is high end? Haha Why do you think the RIAA & MPAA are scared? It's soooooo easy to download music & movies illegally. Or look at YouTube, god knows how many 10mb videos are downloaded each second.

Yeah. They can build planes in Nigeria too.
Sheesh the amount of nationalism is ridiculous when it comes to these matters. It's a wide world out there. You're telling me some other outfit had either the knowledge and capability to bring the required components to fruition and scale to meet apple's demands? Why the heck did they get the Japanese got the contract then? Because they're not American?
Face it - America isn't the absolute best at absolutely everything.
Totally agreed.

That was what I was about to say. Assets getting bigger and bigger would be a waste of space wouldn't it?
