I still think Apple will go MVNO [Mobile Virtual Network Operator] and sell it exclusively though Apple Stores and "Stores Within A Store" (CompUSA, Circuit City, Best Buy, Fry's, Microcenter) - it will most likely be LEASED time from Cingular.
For those wanting it on another service like TMobile or SunCom in the US ... it's almost a certainty that someone will come up with a way to unlock it within a few weeks of release. (maybe even a few days)

wait, now conroe is "widely expected" in the powermacs? I thought woodcrest was... I still think it will be:

So how soon should I expect to see a Merom in a MacBook? "Some months later," or "many months later" than it's appearance on a MacBook Pro? Why not sooner? Just to differentiate the product lines? I thought Merom would replace Yonah in general. I read one report suggesting Merom would be introduced at the same time as the Conroe official introduction near the end of this month.

Whoopidedoo, a whole $50 off. They HAD to do that because of the lack of actually updating anything worthy on the device. One could argue that it isn't enough of a price cut the way competitors music players are priced.
Anyone with half a brain will avoid these 5th G Part 2 devices like the plague, unless they want to waste money that could be spent 4 months later on a widescreen model.
Should we set up the thread now for the people that rush out and buy this version of the iPod then get burned just after Christmas when the real new iPod comes out? They'll need someplace to vent, and it's usually all over these threads. It would be nice to condense it.Agreed. i really feel that greenpeace is trying to use the fact that Apple is the "cool" tech company to get what they want done. for instance, if Apple is bad for the environment, we hippie college kids won't think they're as "cool." Apple loves us hippie college kids and doesn't want to lose us as customers, so they HAVE to be greener - greener than all other tech companies which are JUST AS BAD AS APPLE - then the other tech companies will have to follow suit, because that's the way it is. Apple got rid of CRT displays a while ago- dell still sells them, hp still sells them... they've got friggin lead in them! ALL lcd panels contain mercury.... i mean i don't really see greenpeace's point here. i mean, yeah, i'd like apple to be the greenest, that way i'd feel better about giving them my money. but they do take back old iPods, they do take back your old computer when you buy a Mac... it's not like they do nothing. i think greenpeace is doing a pretty dumb thing here- they should be lobbying governments to make these chemicals illegal to include in consumer electronics, not attempting to bully apple. just my thoughts on the matter.

Why all the excitement at all? I would never ever even considering paying any money for something like that (and I consider myself to be insanely rich).
$10. Or more.
For the privilege of downloading a DRMed-through-the nose file.
Which you don't get to "own" in the same sense as you would own a disk (and you also get nice cover art with the disk!).
For all this money, you don't even get the benefit of being able to redownload the said DRMed file in case your har drive crashes... No sir! Even though iTMS keeps record of everuthing you buy, to download your stuff again, you will need to pay again.
Basically, the content providers try to milk you twice. They want that DRMed download to be treated as a physical object for certain purposes, and a licensed piece of intellectual property for the other purposes.
And everyone's favorite company, Apple, is complicit in this big scam. :mad:

Take an LFI course (look it up). One benefit is things are arranged so if you are on such trial you can put the jury thru the same course so they will understand what happened from your point of view.

But its a monopoly that works, and that is why people buy it. People buy the experience, and while its wrapped in a monopoly paper, people love that. Computer has become more of a social experience than a nerd experience.

It seems like if you can't beat them join them.
But it would kind of make sence for Apple and Creative to make this disappear ASAP with a paltry gesture and "join" forces in the iPod war against Microsoft and the other crappy non-iPod players out there.....

My point is...
1) The Movies take up huge amounts of storage space.
2) I hate having to always plug external drives into my iBook.
3) We need redundancy for storing these movies we buy. An "external HD" just won't cut it.
4) If I want to take my iBook on the road with me, then how are the other people in my house going to access the Movies and other media via iTV if it's stored on my iBook or some "external HD" which requires a host computer to be of any use.
I think the major problem with external hardrives, is that iTunes will organises all your content into the Music folder. I just bought a 300GB drive and would love to place all my movies in their, but at the same time I want my music on my Mac (not the external). Microsoft doesn't really play in the consumer / gadget / toy market, which simply means that you don't get to see most of their products unless you work in a corporate data center. Somebody with enough time on their hands might want to analyze the spending behavior and amount of staff and level of salaries to find out -WHY- that was the case. Maybe the guys at Microsoft have higher salaries and more vacation. Maybe Ballmer put more money into RD and marketing than in the last quarter. Maybe they bought more startups than before.
Actually, who cares. Both companies are extremely profitable, but Microsoft has been profitable for a couple of decades more than Apple (who almost died in the 1990s while Microsoft was making more money than anybody else).

I am not sure if it is a smart move for apple to enter into the cell phone market. There is a lot of competition and I think resources could be used better elsewhere. But it seems Apple knows a lot more about it than me.

I feel vindicated in my 60GB 5G purchase a few months back, particularly since I got it on sale. If I can upgrade the software, I'm all chuckles. Besides, I've almost never found the screen brightness an issue.
I do wish I could ultra-boost the audio on-board. Some of the video digitizations I have are too quiet.

the tide is turning against Apple here, they need to clean up their act and get this whole thing working better.
i understand the walled-garden approach and respect that, but they also need to get the store cleaned up/organized and they need to work better with developers - which might just mean hiring more people to work with them on a daily basis.

Just downloading some of these HD trailers takes forever, and they look terrible on the displays at the apple store (tried it there only because I thought it was my computer, not the technology).
What the hell are you talking about? I don't know what HD trailers you were downloading, but they look fantastic on my screen. Also, yes, some of them take forever if you're on a slower connection but it sounds as though everyone's banking on broadband these days; it has become the rule, not the exception.

I don't see the connection between overclocking and childishness. Overclocking is done by enthusiasts and power users of all ages. There is nothing wrong with it, and the practice should not be stigmatized.
You are right, there is nothing wrong with it. However, expecting to buy a Pro machine seemingly to do "work" with it and expecting to overclock it is childish.
I don't the servers that make this website and forum work are overclocked. They seem to be doing just fine as well.
